Grandma’s Coral, 2023
110cm x 30cm x 30cm
Mixed media sourced from The Scrap Space, Shoreham
Every year 11 million tonnes of plastic is discarded into the ocean, and 14 percent of the world’s corals was lost between 2009 and 20182. In addition to this, approximately 8% of the European microplastics that are released into the ocean are from synthetic textiles.
The Scrap Space in Shoreham-by-Sea redistributes donated waste for art, craft, play, theatre and DIY, at low cost, and the fabric materials used in the creation of this sculpture were all gathered at The Scrap Space in order to promote a circular craft economy and reduce the amount of waste produced in the making of this object.
Charlie believes that artists should try to take a conscientious approach where possibly to sourcing their materials for their work, and as such Grandma’s Coral is a sculpture intended to provoke thought and consideration to that effect.
Knitting, crochet, and basketry has been used to bring the sculpture into the domestic sphere to emphasise the fact that the pollution of our oceans is an issue that everyone can help with.
Thank you to We Are Over the Moon for their work in creating a circular scrap economy.
